Mallorca

One of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, Mallorca has the advantage of a hot summer sun whilst still often being blessed with refreshing sea breezes. In the winter the weather is mild, although night times can get quite chilly.

There is something for everyone here in Mallorca, no matter what the season. Away from the countless restaurants and bars a lot of the island is still untouched by tourism, so if you want to venture off the beaten track, you can get a taste of how the Mallorquine locals spend their time.

Alcudia

Resort of Port d'Alcudia is situated in the north of Mallorca at the top of a long curving bay with an endless white sandy beach. It is two miles (3km) south of the historical old town of Alcudia, from which it takes its name. The sprawling, purpose-built resort, together with its neighbour Playa de Muro, stretches for five miles (8km) either side of the coast road and is particularly popular with British, German and Scandinavian families. It has a fairly relaxed atmosphere; its spectacular beach is the major attraction, though it is also well placed for exploring the attractions around the north of the island.

Magaluf / Palma Nova

Magaluf is the most popular resort on the island of Majorca and is located next to neighbouring Torrenova and Palma Nova, approximately 15 miles (24klm) from Palma airport. The resort has three fabulous beaches namely Majorca Beach, Magaluf Beach and Palma Nova Beach. It is famous for its numerous bars, clubs and vibrant nightlife which is a huge attraction for the younger generation during the peak summer months, all to be found on the Punta Ballena strip. Magaluf is not just for the young, the resort caters for all ages with plenty of Family friendly bars and restaurants including the world famous “Pirates” show a must for all visitors to the resort.

Puerto Pollensa

Puerto Pollensa is a much-loved family resort found on the North West coast of the Balearic island of Majorca. Puerto Pollensa holidays will offer you all the benefits of a warm, sunny Mediterranean setting, and is popular with holiday visitors from April to October. Originally a small fishing village, Puerto Pollensa has grown into a contained holiday resort, and still retains its original old-world charm. It is also a centre for artists and musicians. Families return year after year to holiday in Puerto Pollensa to enjoy the breath-taking scenery, child-friendly sandy beaches, great hotels and restaurants and opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside.

Puerto Soller

The resort of Puerto de Soller (Port de Sóller) is to be found on the North West coast of Mallorca, 35 kilometres north of Palma and 44 kilometres north of the international airport. The resort is built around a fishing harbour and a marina for pleasure craft. There is a beach side promenade on the other side of the bay to the harbour and the main seafront road is lined with shops, restaurants and hotels.

Port de Sóller is popular with older couples and those interested in scenery and who are looking for a relaxing holiday. The beaches are quite small and night life consists of one or two bars and a disco, as well as musical entertainment provided by hotels. The resort hosts a number of restaurants offering local cuisine and international food.

There is a regular tram service to Sóller and a scenic narrow-gauge railway from Sóller to Palma several times a day. There are also frequent buses to Palma.

Weather in Mallorca

Mallorca’s climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, humid winters. The island is protected from northerly weather systems by the Tramuntana Mountains which shield it from winter winds, and collect most of the rainfall. Even in the peak rainfall months of autumn, average total monthly rainfall in Palma de Mallorca is between 55 and 75 mm (2-3 inches), and is significantly less through winter.
Holiday and other outdoor pursuits are all year round activities on Mallorca and are seldom interrupted by bad weather. The peak summer months of July and August, which coincide with school holidays are also the hottest months, with virtually no clouds and about 15 hours of sunshine daily. Protection from the sun is essential, especially if the usual cooling sea breezes mask the true power of the sun – wear a hat, use sunscreen, sunbathe in short doses, and drink loads of water. Except in the mountains, Mallorca winter temperatures are generally mild and, even at night, rarely drop below freezing. Once or twice a year, the mountain tops get a light dusting of snow, which adds a new dimension to this sunny island’s beautiful scenery.
